We just moved into our new house last weekend. We’re thankful it falls on a holiday “Labour Day”. It’s a long weekend and that gives us plus one day off.
Finally, this was an answered prayer. We are one big happy family. But, the struggle is real, it’s hard to move things in and out. We’re living in Singapore for six years and we had quiet a lot of stuff already.
Struggles..
Sorting things, general cleaning
We never realize how much junk things we own. It’s hard to decide if we still need those items we clean up, or it will be going to waste. Old shoes, bags, clothes that are not in used for a long time. As much as we wanted to keep them or send to PH/donate things there are some items we can’t keep already.
As we prepare to clean, we follow this mantra – if you haven’t used it in a year or more, you probably don’t need it.
Asking for FREE Cartons
We don’t want to buy cartons, it was costly. The mover sells $2.50 for used cartons free delivery for 20 pieces, a total of $50.00. No way! What we did we asked for free cartons to grocery stores nearby and my sister who’s working in a packaging company collected 8 new boxes. #StruggleIsReal she carry those cartons from Boon Lay to Aljunied.
Moving things on our own
We are confident that we can carry all our things, household goods, etc. safely. We didn’t hire a helper. But the struggle is real, boxes were heavy, were moving at noon – the weather is so hot. Time is running, we need to unload all our things in the lorry.
Our schedule move in is at 11 AM. The driver arrived 30 minutes earlier. We borrowed their trolley and started to get all our things from 5th floor to the ground floor. We put all things together first because the moment we will put items inside the lorry that will be the Start Time. We book one hour for $70 at A & A Removal and Delivery Services.
Headache and body pain
One day after were done we felt back, shoulder and arm pain. I also had a headache due to lack of sleep or maybe due to skipping meals. Were still in the process of cleaning and organizing things especially the kitchen.
Unpacking things
Where should I/we begin? In our room or in the kitchen? We need to assign our task. Fixing the clothes in the cabinets are always near the top of my list followed by the kitchen. By I ended up cleaning the boxes in the living area and put boxes where it belongs to.
EJ unpack most of the things for our room.
Things we learned..
Let your colleagues, friends know that you’re moving house. It’s a nice feeling that friends are willing to help, offer their time or give you some tips about renting a house. It’s our first time to rent whole house, ideas from main tenants friends were very useful.
Don’t be shy to ask. Yes, it’s challenging. We graciously asked for spare, used and new cartons to grocery stores. Thankfully we got new and used cartons to put most of our things intact.
Pack early. We estimated one week time to pack all our things (after our working hours). We’re four so it’s easy for us to deligate task. We put clothes first and we labelled the boxes so it’s easy for us to unpack things in designated area.
Prepare packing things must have and put it in one place.
– Masking Tape
– Pentel Pen
– Scissor
– Boxes
– Woven shopping and plastic bags
Sleep well and eat heavy breakfast. Physical energy – carrying things and focus/memory actually requires more energy. If youre moving yourself be physically prepared.
P.S. Based on our personal experience, don’t move items in the morning, instead do it at night to avoid crowded elevator and hot weather.
That’s all 🙂 Keep struggling because through the struggle we learn to extend our patience, be resourceful, creative, team work and the reward will be beautiful.
